Crosta Calcária dos Profetas is a white wine produced by António Maçanita on the island of Porto Santo, under the DOP Madeirense designation of origin, Portugal. This wine is composed of 83% Listrão and 17% Caracol, sourced from 40- to 80-year-old vines cultivated in calcareous soils with a sandy-loam texture and a pH above 8.5. The vines, grown low to the ground and shielded from winds and marine salinity by crochet walls or reed screens, reflect the winemaking tradition of this volcanic island.The harvest is carried out manually, with meticulous vineyard selection and a two-stage picking process to ensure optimal grape ripeness. The vinification, conducted for the first time on the island of Porto Santo, includes direct pressing of whole clusters, separation into three fractions, and spontaneous fermentation without SO2 addition until completion. The wine is aged for 11 months on lees in 250- and 500-liter stainless steel tanks and 228-liter barrels.Pale yellow in color, Crosta Calcária dos Profetas boasts an intense aromatic profile with saline, mineral, gunpowder, and iodine notes. On the palate, it delivers a full and textured attack, with aromas echoed in the retronasal and exceptional persistence. Perfect for pairing with seafood such as scallops, clams, and semi-fatty fish prepared with warm flavors, it is best served at 10°C to fully appreciate its freshness and complexity. With a very limited production and numbered bottles, this Atlantic wine is a true enological gem from the island of Porto Santo.
