Sercial dos Villões is a white wine made by Antonio Maçanita and Nuno Faria from the Sercial variety grown in the D.O.P. Madeirense in Portugal.Born on the volcanic island of Madeira, where acidic soils—leptosols and andosols—and the ocean’s influence impart tension and salinity, this wine captures the Atlantic spirit of Seixal on the north side, just a breath from the sea. Vines trained on traditional pergolas, around three decades old, and the untamed character of Sercial—nicknamed Esgana-Cão for its vibrant acidity—shape a vertical, precise, deeply mineral profile.Grapes are hand-harvested in Madeira and travel in 40 kg crates to Porto Santo for meticulous sorting and direct pressing of whole clusters. With no SO2 added until the end of fermentation, the must is allowed to pre-oxidize and ferment spontaneously, mostly in 500 L horizontal stainless-steel tanks and in a single 228 L barrel. The wine ages on its lees for nine months—88% in stainless steel and 12% in new French oak—polishing texture without dulling the edge.In the glass it shows lemon-yellow hues and a pure perfume of wet stone and citrus with an exotic nod to pitanga. On the palate it is taut and elongated, with cutting acidity and marked salinity, leaving a persistent, refreshing finish. Its frank, maritime nature makes it an ideal partner for shellfish and oily fish, cleansing and elevating in equal measure. With a limited production of 4,000 bottles and total sulfites below 40 mg/L, it is a contemporary, luminous interpretation of Madeiran Sercial: island authenticity, winemaking precision, and a personality that speaks the language of the ocean.
