The origin of Selbach-Oster dates back to 1661 through the union of the two families that give the Weingut its name. The family has had interests in cooperage, viticulture and river shipping, in what could be a perfect example of vertical integration in the German wine industry.
Today they have 16 hectares of vineyards, including some of the most prestigious vineyards in Zeltingen (Zeltingen Schlossberg, Zeltingen Sonnenuhr, Graacher Domprobst or Wehlener Sonnenuhr), which they produce following the precepts of pradikatt (Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese). Vineyards that are composed of blue slate from the Devonian period, with slopes of between 30 and 60 percent inclination. Some of the best terroirs in the world.
The tradition and strength of the winery for more than three centuries have instilled in the Selbachs a predilection for quality and hard work as a precursor to that quality. That hard work includes green pruning in August, the usual manual harvest in the Moselle and winemaking in the thousand-liter foudres traditional in the area.
If something had to be highlighted about the Selbach-Oster wines, it would surely be the cleanliness and transmission of the terroir that they are capable of achieving. Not in vain is it one of the largest Weingut in Germany.
