The new generation is coming on strong, and Lea, whom we were lucky enough to meet on our first trip to the Rhône, introduces us to this great Northern Rhône wine from slate soils. Old vines on steep slopes, where Syrah is planted but also a small proportion of Viognier that she ferments together and with the whole cluster to make this initiatory and very personal wine. Vinification is traditional in the Bonnefond, with the particularity that this wine is aged in large barrels previously used for Condrieu, a white wine.
Violets, blackberries and rock fragments appear on the nose of Mon Père's Côte Rôtie Dans les Vignes, a towering effort that Joe Czerwinski says is the best wine he's ever tasted at Bonnefond. The oak is perfectly judged and blends beautifully into the full-bodied yet nearly weightless wine, adding just a touch of mocha to a gloriously creamy mouthfeel. Long and lush, it should drink well for at least the next 15 years, maybe longer.
