La historia de la Grand-Puy-Lacoste es fascinante en muchos sentidos. Se trata de una saga familiar que se remonta al siglo XVI. El nombre de Grand-Puy, ya se menciona en los documentos de la Edad Media, proviene del término antiguo "puy", que significa "loma, pequeña altura". Fiel a su nombre, el viñedo se asienta sobre un terroir similar a la de los primeros crus del Médoc. Desde el siglo XVI la propiedad permaneció unida a una sola familia de generación en generación, a través de matrimonios hasta 1920, antes de que pasara a manos de otra familia en 1978, los Borie.
