Fitapreta Chao dos Eremitas Os Paulistas tinto is a red wine crafted by António Maçanita from indigenous grape varieties Castelão, Alfrocheiro, Trincadeira, Moreto, and Tinta Carvalha, sourced from the historic vineyard of Chão dos Eremitas in Portugal's Alentejo region. Established in 1970 on the southern foothills of Serra d’Ossa, this vineyard is extraordinary both for its privileged location and its rich viticultural history, which traces back to medieval times. Historically significant, it was the site where the hermit monks of Saint Paul’s order (Os Paulistas) produced their wines for centuries, even benefiting from a Papal exemption from vineyard taxes dating back to 1397. Archaeological discoveries extend the site’s viticultural heritage even further, evidencing Phoenician winemaking nearly three thousand years ago.Displaying a medium-concentrated ruby hue with violet hints, Os Paulistas anticipates subtle complexity and depth. The nose unfolds expressively with vibrant aromas of wild red berries intertwined with delicate hints of forest undergrowth and leather, evoking its wild, genuine terroir. The palate is characterized by a fresh and focused entry, revealing flavors of red forest fruits, pomegranate, and delicate earthy notes. It showcases refined structure and vibrant acidity, gracefully balanced by firm yet polished tannins, culminating in a long, elegant finish. This wine symbolizes a return to an authentic Alentejo, untainted by excessive modernity, emphasizing tradition, purity, and historical essence. Aged for 18 months in used French oak barrels, Os Paulistas tinto reconnects with history through a contemporary lens, reflecting tradition, authenticity, and timeless elegance. It pairs beautifully with complex fatty fish dishes and hearty, slow-cooked meats, offering an evocative sensory journey that reconnects us with wine’s most genuine expression.
