Can Rafols Montombra 2021

Can Ràfols dels Caus is one of the most unique, revolutionary, and charismatic wineries in Catalonia and throughout Southern Europe. Located in the municipality of Avinyonet del Penedès (Barcelona), the estate is a benchmark for organic viticulture and the expression of the calcareous terroir. The heart and soul of the winery was Carlos Esteva (1950-2023), a visionary, nonconformist winemaker and art lover who, in 1979, decided to move to the Roman-era farmhouse that his grandfather Jacinto had acquired in 1930.

The Montombra range represents Can Ràfols dels Caus' most exclusive, radical, and "haute couture" project to date. Under this name, the winery produces two single-vineyard wines (one white and one red) from an extreme terroir in the Garraf Massif, considered by the winery to be a true Grand Cru in Catalonia. It comes from a rugged hillside on the north side of the estate, with vertical slopes of up to 50% structured in dry-stone terraces. It is made from Cariñena grapes, where its rustic character blends with the structure of Syrah (and incorporates touches of Touriga Nacional depending on the plot). It is aged for 16 months in 500-liter French oak barrels.
