Escolinas Verdejo Negro is a single varietal from the Principality of Asturias, also called Baboso in the Canary Islands or Alfrocheiro in Portugal. Verdejo Negro is the rarest red variety in Cangas. It is an ancient breed with a long history in the vineyards of Europe, which is known as Trousseau in France (Jura), Bastardo in Portugal (Madeira) and in other areas of Spain, such as Merenzao (Galicia) or Maturana (Rioja). . It is estimated that it arrived in Cangas during the 11th century, accompanying the Benedictine monks who lived in the Corias Monastery since its foundation. It is an early maturing grape, with sufficient tannic load and great acidity, which adapts better than any other to northern, maritime and cool climates. This wine includes a selection of southeast exposure estates, with glasses over 60 years old and limited production, resulting in a truly elegant and unique wine. Escolinas Verdejo Negro is a super special wine due to the scarcity of this variety, but above all because of its balance between simplicity, elegance and perfume. Perhaps it has more notes in common with wines made in northern Europe than with any other Spanish region. It is only aged for 8 months in stainless steel so that the wood does not disguise its varietal characteristics in the slightest. Escolinas bottles the terroir of Cangas del Narcea (Asturias, Spain) from the best native grapes. The Escolinas area is made up of a group of microfarms of just 0.6 hectares in Cangas del Narcea and other towns in the region. These small vineyards are not mechanizable, they suffer slopes of up to 30% together with their altitude of more than 500 meters above sea level, they constitute one of the few mountain vineyards in Spain. On these steep slopes, the vines survive on soils with a strong slate component, a particularity of the terroir that serves to self-regulate the vigor of the plant and gives rise to small productions of wines with a fine and elegant profile. Varieties such as Albarín Blanco, Verdejo Negro, Albarín Negro and Carrasquín have adapted perfectly to the extreme climate of Cangas and its slate soils, forming a set of varieties that give the wines character and personality.
