Description
Os Granitos 2020 is a red wine crafted by António Madeira with Jaen, Baga, Tinta Amarela, and other 20 native grape varieties in the Dão region, Portugal. António Madeira, of Portuguese and French descent, has his roots in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, he has been researching the sites in this subregion that our ancestors elected as the best for vineyards, those that we might call the ""Grand Crus of the Dão highlands"", and found a series of old vines that are distinctive because of the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics, and nuances of their granitic soils and sun exposures. In this small parcel, we find a great variation of soils, around 5 different types, which vary the colors and textures of the granites in the different areas of the vineyard. The result is a complex, mineral, fine, and full of energy wine, showing a classic side of the Dão Serra da Estrela. The winemaking philosophy was to respect the grapes and nature and focus on seeking the expression of the terroir of Serra da Estrela; therefore, no other product was used except sulfur. Alcoholic fermentation took place in open vats and began naturally, with the yeast from the vine itself, to express its identity in the purest form. Very little extraction was sought. After pressing, the wine was placed directly into used 500-liter barrels, where it aged for 18 months. This wine expresses the character and elegance of the land that witnessed its birth and takes us on a journey through time to discover the aromas and flavors of the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, just as it was in the past. Floral and resinous nose with lovely aromatics. On the palate, it is very fresh, bright, direct, and elegant, with supple raspberry and cherry fruit with some nice green hints, and even a touch of peachy richness. It is juicy and bright with good acidity and lovely precision. The tannins are well resolved: it has focus and purity and a brightness to it. A ""Grand Cru"" of the Dão Serra da Estrela.
