ESCARPMENT is a unique location in Martinborough, New Zealand. A long, steep slope at the end of the plain in the southeast corner of the North Island. We are in the Wairarapa region, in Maori territory, where ancient alluvial soils run through the land. Larry McKenna, also called “Larry McPinot” and “the prince of Pinot Noir”, is the creative soul of Escarpment. His name is closely linked to this variety; After years of vinifying this grape, today Escarpment defines the Martinboroug terroir with a fantastic collection of plot wines. His focus is to create wines with structure, complexity and expression of fruit, wines that reflect the diversity of each of these terroirs. Escarpment Pinot Noir exalts the unique terroir of Martinborough and the winery's production philosophy through the selection of different plots of Pinot Noir, a variety that expresses itself magnificently in this cold climate. Most of the fruit comes from the vineyards around Te Muna Road. Manual harvest and fermentation in open containers with minimal intervention; Remounted only once a day in order to have a light extraction and maceration with their skins for 20 days; Aging in French oak barrels for 11 months and another 7 months in stainless steel tanks prior to bottling without filtration. This wine showcases the pure Escarpment style with its intense complexity, texture and blend of black cherry and plum fruit flavors; Intense herbal perfume and tasty notes of licorice, mushrooms and spices. The tannins are friendly and ripe in the mouth.
