Divina Proporción Bodegas: Toro wines with family soul and land-driven character
Divina Proporción Bodegas is a family project born in Toro, Zamora, from the union between agriculture, vineyard and a very personal way of understanding the land. Its owner, Máximo San José de la Rosa, explains that nature and the countryside have been part of his life since childhood, and that this connection eventually found its path through the vineyard and the fertile Vega de Toro.
The winery laid its first stone in 2009, planted the vineyard around it in 2010 and saw its first wine born in 2011. Since then, Divina Proporción has consolidated itself as a winery linked to the Toro Designation of Origin, Tinta de Toro and a simple but demanding philosophy: to make wines from good grapes, respect the fruit and work every wine with the care of someone who understands that the soul of wine lies in the vineyard.
A family dream in the Vega de Toro
The story of Divina Proporción is the story of a dream fulfilled. Máximo San José de la Rosa launched the winery with the support of his family, turning an agricultural vocation into a wine project with its own identity. His brother Juan takes part in cultivating the land and caring for the vines every day, while Yovana, Máximo’s wife, is in charge of administrative, commercial and public relations tasks.
This family character can be felt throughout the philosophy of the house. Divina Proporción does not present itself as an industrial or impersonal winery, but as a close, carefully managed project deeply connected to its place. Every wine is born from a clear idea: to express the sacred land of Toro, the history of Tinta de Toro and the work of a family that lives wine from within.
Toro: a historic appellation with its own strength
Talking about Divina Proporción also means talking about Toro, one of the wine regions with the strongest personality in Castilla y León. Winemaking in this area has very ancient roots, and the region enjoyed moments of great splendour during the Middle Ages, when its wines were granted royal privileges for trade.
The Toro Designation of Origin was officially consolidated in 1987, but its history goes much further back. Its landscape, extreme climate, sandy and stony soils, and the strength of Tinta de Toro have created a highly recognizable identity: intense, deep, concentrated wines with a personality that is difficult to confuse.
Tinta de Toro: the variety that defines the project
Tinta de Toro is the great protagonist of Divina Proporción. This variety, adapted over centuries to the extreme conditions of the area, produces wines with colour, structure, fruit, intensity and a natural ability to express the character of the terroir.
In Toro, the climate ranges from very cold winters to very hot summers, with vineyards located between 600 and 900 metres above sea level and large temperature differences between day and night during the summer months. These conditions, together with scarce rainfall, favour intense and balanced ripening, resulting in grapes with great concentration and personality.
Old vines, ungrafted vineyards and organic farming
One of the great values of Divina Proporción lies in its vineyard. The winery owns 30 hectares of vineyards and closely controls another 100 hectares belonging to growers in the area. Many of these vines are at least 30 years old, and some small plots even reach 100 years of age.
