Heredade do Esporao

Heredade do Esporao

Esporão is one of the great benchmarks of Portugal’s Alentejo region, a project born in the Herdade do Esporão estate in Reguengos de Monsaraz, where wine, landscape, and agriculture have coexisted for centuries. With origins tied to the estate boundaries established in the 13th century and a modern winemaking era that began in the 1970s, the winery has built its identity on respect for the environment, biodiversity, and an honest expression of terroir. Today, it stands as one of the essential names in contemporary Portuguese wine.

Herdade do Esporão, a landscape with centuries of history

The Herdade do Esporão lies in the heart of Alentejo, southeast of Lisbon, near Reguengos de Monsaraz. It is a landscape of gentle hills, vineyards, olive groves, and cork oak forests that has been inhabited since ancient times.

The estate boundaries were defined in 1267 and, remarkably, have remained almost unchanged ever since, despite centuries of historical change, ownership shifts, and regional conflicts.

From historic estate to modern wine project

Although the territory’s history is medieval, Esporão’s modern winemaking project began in 1973, when the estate was acquired by José Roquette and Joaquim Bandeira.

From that moment, a deep transformation of both vineyard and winery began, aiming to produce high-quality wines closely linked to the Alentejo terroir. The first commercial wine was released in 1985.

A vast, warm and expressive Alentejo

Alentejo is one of Portugal’s largest and most diverse wine regions. At Esporão, the vineyards benefit from a warm, dry climate and a variety of soils that allow different native grape varieties to thrive.

The result is wines that combine ripeness, volume, and surprising freshness when the vineyard is properly interpreted.

Vineyard, sustainability and biodiversity

Esporão follows a clear philosophy: producing the best possible grapes while respecting the natural balance of the environment.

Vineyard management has evolved from conventional farming to integrated and organic practices. Biodiversity and soil health are central pillars of the project.

Native grape varieties at the core

The winery focuses on indigenous Alentejo varieties, sometimes blended with international grapes.

This approach allows the wines to reflect both the identity of the region and the versatility of its climate, resulting in wines with structure, ripe fruit, and a very recognizable profile.

A project that goes beyond wine

Esporão is not limited to wine. The estate has expanded into olive oil production and wine tourism, always maintaining the same focus on origin and sustainability.

The farm operates as a complete agricultural ecosystem where everything is interconnected.

A contemporary benchmark winery

Today, Esporão is one of Portugal’s leading references, not only for the quality of its wines but also for its approach to agriculture and business.

The combination of tradition, innovation, and environmental respect has made Herdade do Esporão a model within European wine.
