Francois Mitjaville

Francois Mitjaville

François Mitjavile does not make wines to fit Bordeaux. He makes wines to break its mould. In Saint-Émilion, Tertre Roteboeuf is almost an anomaly: low yields, late harvesting, long ageing, and a way of working that follows no official recipe. Here, wine does not aim for correctness—it aims for personality. And it has plenty of it. These are intense, enveloping, almost hypnotic wines that divide opinion but never go unnoticed. Más información sobre Francois Mitjaville

François Mitjavile is one of the most singular figures in Bordeaux wine.
His work at Tertre Roteboeuf (Saint-Émilion) and Roc de Cambes (Côtes de Bourg) has built an almost mythical reputation within the world of cult wines.

He does not follow trends. He does not seek consensus. His philosophy is deeply personal.

Tertre Roteboeuf: a radical vision in Saint-Émilion

In a region known for its classical structure and strict classifications, Tertre Roteboeuf stands apart as something entirely different.

The vines are farmed with extremely low yields and harvested at very high ripeness, aiming for an intense and sensual expression of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The result is dense, profound wines with an almost enveloping texture.

Roc de Cambes: the other side of the same vision

On the right bank of Côtes de Bourg, Roc de Cambes applies the same philosophy in a different landscape.

Here the wine gains a more Atlantic dimension, but keeps the same core idea: extracting the full character of the terroir without artificially softening it.

Ageing, patience and wine construction

One of the most distinctive traits of Mitjavile’s approach is extended ageing.

The wines spend long periods in barrel before being considered ready, seeking a total integration between fruit, oak, and structure.

There is no rush in his way of making wine.

A distinctive style in Bordeaux

François Mitjavile’s wines are instantly recognisable:

  • Broad, enveloping texture
  • Marked aromatic ripeness
  • A sense of volume without rigidity
  • Opulent yet balanced style

They move away from Bordeaux’s more technical classicism into a more emotional territory.

A cult producer, not a consensus maker

Mitjavile has never sought general approval.
His wines inspire either deep admiration or confusion, but rarely indifference.

That strong personality is precisely what has made them cult references among collectors and sommeliers.

François Mitjavile today

Today, his wines remain limited in production and highly sought after.
Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes are now essential names for understanding Bordeaux’s freer, more expressive side.

François Mitjavile at Coalla Gourmet

At Coalla Gourmet, we select François Mitjavile because he represents another way of understanding Bordeaux: more emotional, more intense, and completely personal.
