A store that was never meant to be a conventional store
Coalla didn’t start as a branding idea or a project designed to look good on social media. It began in 1955 as a neighbourhood grocer with a fairly simple obsession: selling things that were genuinely good.
Over time, that idea didn’t really change. What changed was the size of the cellar, the range of products, and the type of customers who started walking in saying, “okay, there’s serious quality here.”
Today, Coalla is a network of stores and an online universe where the product still comes before the storytelling.
Wine as an excuse for something better
Wine here is not decoration or an endless, soulless catalogue. It is selection. It is judgement. It is people tasting bottles before they ever reach the shelf.
We work with small wineries, major projects, and well-known labels, but always with the same idea: every wine should have something to say when it’s opened, not just when you read the back label.
You don’t need to know about wine to buy here. You just need to want to drink well.
Cheese, tins, and other things that complicate simple decisions
You walk in thinking you’ll grab “something quick” and leave with three cheeses, two tins you didn’t plan on buying, and an internal debate about whether you really needed that pâté.
The answer is usually yes.
The good part is that everything here is chosen with intention. There is no filler. Nothing exists just to fill space. Every product is here because someone tried it and said: this deserves a place.
The bar: where things get a little more serious (or not)
If the shop is the beginning, the bar is where the plan changes.
A bottle gets opened, something is tasted, a dish is shared, and suddenly you find yourself holding a fairly strong opinion about a wine you knew nothing about five minutes earlier.
It’s where Coalla becomes clearer: product, people, and conversation around the table. No unnecessary ceremony.
A way of selecting that doesn’t come from offices
There are no big corporate speeches behind each product. There is a team that tastes, selects, rejects, and tastes again.
The criteria is not theoretical. It is practical. Open it, taste it, and decide whether it belongs in a store that aims to keep a high standard without becoming rigid.
From Asturias to Madrid without changing the original idea
Coalla was born in Asturias and grew with a very clear way of understanding the business: taking care of the product as if it were its own.
Over the years, Madrid arrived, online arrived, and visibility increased—but the foundation remains the same.
Not selling everything. Selling what is good.
Coalla at Coalla Gourmet
Coalla Gourmet is the online version of all this. A place where you can buy wine, gourmet products, and gifts without losing the selection criteria behind every item.
And if you end up visiting the store, even better. Because here, products make more sense when you taste them than when you read about them.
