A Great Historic Château of Pauillac
Château Pichon Baron is one of the great historic names of Bordeaux and was classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855.
The estate was founded in 1694 following the marriage of Thérèse de Rauzan and Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, giving rise to one of the most important lineages in the Médoc.
In 1850, the property was divided into two estates, creating Château Pichon Baron and Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande.
The majestic Renaissance-inspired château built in 1851, with its iconic towers, has become one of the visual symbols of Pauillac.
An Exceptional Gravel Terroir in Pauillac
The vineyard is located on the famous Médoc gravel soils formed during the Quaternary period, with large pebbles and sandy components that provide natural drainage and thermal regulation.
The proximity of the Gironde estuary creates a mild microclimate ideal for the slow and balanced ripening of the grapes.
The historic terroir known as the “Butte de Pichon Baron” forms the heart of the Grand Vin and has been under vine since 1694.
The Vineyard and Grape Varieties
The estate covers approximately 75–92 hectares of vineyard, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vineyard composition is approximately 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, along with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and a small proportion of Sémillon.
Each plot is managed individually to preserve the identity of every soil type and optimize fruit quality.
Rigorous Selection and Precision Winemaking
The philosophy of Château Pichon Baron is based on extremely rigorous selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Only the best plots and oldest vines are used for the Grand Vin, with limited production maintained to ensure a consistently exceptional standard.
The winemaking process aims to express the Pauillac terroir with purity, combining technical precision with Bordeaux tradition.
Aging and Exceptional Cellaring Potential
The wines are aged in French oak barrels, adding depth, structure, and aromatic complexity.
Château Pichon Baron is renowned for its extraordinary aging potential, capable of evolving beautifully for more than 30 or 40 years in bottle.
Over time, it develops complex notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco, and fine spices.
Style and Tasting Notes
Château Pichon Baron represents the classic Pauillac style: power, structure, and elegance.
The nose reveals aromas of cassis, ripe black fruit, graphite, licorice, and spicy notes.
On the palate, it offers great concentration, firm tannins, and a refined texture with a long, mineral finish.
Recent vintages also display increasing precision and freshness.
