History of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a 5ème Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, located in the prestigious Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Its history dates back to the 18th century, and the estate has passed through several families before being consolidated under the Borie family in 1978.
Since then, the family has carried out extensive vineyard and winery renovations with the goal of preserving the château’s classic character while improving the precision and quality of its wines.
The Pauillac terroir
The vineyard of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is located on a gravel hill typical of Pauillac. These deep gravel soils, formed by ancient alluvial deposits, provide excellent drainage and heat retention during the day.
This terroir is especially suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which ripens slowly here and develops structure, intensity, and remarkable aging potential.
Vineyard and grape varieties
The estate covers around 60 hectares in production, planted at high density, which encourages low yields and high concentration.
The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, providing a balance of power, fruit, and elegance.
Sustainable viticulture and precision
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste practices sustainable viticulture, with reduced chemical treatments, no insecticides, and mechanical soil work.
Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with double sorting of grapes to ensure only the highest-quality fruit is selected.
Winemaking and aging
Winemaking takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, aiming for gentle and respectful extractions.
The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for approximately 16 to 18 months, with a high proportion of new oak that adds structure without masking the identity of the terroir.
Style and tasting notes
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste wines are known for their classic Pauillac style, with aromas of black fruit, cedar, spices, tobacco, and mineral notes.
On the palate, they are firm and structured, with precise tannins and an elegant profile that allows for excellent aging potential.
