History and Heritage of Castell del Remei

Castell del Remei is a centuries-old wine cellar located in Penelles, La Noguera, Catalonia. With a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times, it is recognized as the oldest fine wine cellar in Catalonia. The 19th-century château-style estate combines historic architecture with vineyards, wooded areas, and lakes, creating a unique cultural and natural heritage.

Vineyards and Grape Varieties

The estate has 100 hectares of vineyards, mostly on nearby mountain slopes between 700–800 meters above sea level. The soils are loamy-clay with abundant gravel, ensuring excellent drainage. The vines, trained in the Royat double cordon system, have a planting density of 4,000–5,000 plants per hectare and an average age exceeding 25 years.

Castell del Remei cultivates native grape varieties such as garnacha, ull de llebre, carinyena, trepat, malvasia, and macabeo, alongside French grape varieties introduced in the 19th century, including cabernet sauvignon, syrah, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc.

Winemaking and Aging

The cellar combines traditional methods and modern technology. Over 1,000 barrels of French and American oak are used for aging, while fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with temperature control and pneumatic presses. Annual production exceeds one million bottles, preserving the character of each vineyard plot.

Castell del Remei practices ecological and sustainable viticulture, minimizing chemical treatments and promoting research in viticulture and oenology.
