At Coalla Gourmet, we present Bodegas Zárate, one of Galicia's historic wineries, whose tradition dates back to 1707, when Diego Zárate y Murga—the first Marquis of Montesacro by decree of Philip V—began the family's winemaking legacy.

Since then, the Zárate family has maintained its connection to its vineyards generation after generation, cultivating plots in the Salnés Valley and producing wines that faithfully express the Atlantic character of their land.

Pioneers of modern Albariño

Since the mid-20th century, Zárate has been one of the pioneering wineries in the production of Albariño as it is known today. Their goal was to take this wine beyond the realm of family consumption and introduce it first to the rest of Spain and later to the international scene.

Ernesto Zárate also played a key role in promoting this wine by founding the Cambados Albariño Festival, a competition that the winery itself won in its first three consecutive editions.

Vineyards in the Heart of the Salnés Valley

The estate currently cultivates just over six hectares of vineyards spread across different plots located in the parishes of Sisán and Padrenda, in the Salnés Valley, considered the birthplace of Albariño.

These poor, sunny soils offer ideal conditions for cultivating the variety. The average age of the vines is around 30 years, although some older, ungrafted vines serve as the basis for massal selections that allow the vineyard's identity to be maintained in new plantings.

Environmentally Friendly Viticulture

Since 2000, winemaker and viticulturist Eulogio Pomares has managed the work in the vineyard and winery, implementing practices based on the utmost respect for the environment.

The plots are cultivated with permanent natural ground cover and without the use of herbicides or synthetic chemical fertilizers. Thanks to this philosophy, the winery obtained Integrated Production certification for its harvest in 2006, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable viticulture.
