A project born between Rioja and Argentina
Dominio del Challao emerges from the vision of winemaker Manu Michelini together with Carlos Fernández in Labastida, Rioja Alavesa.
A project that blends international experience with a deep respect for the Rioja terroir.
The goal is clear: to craft wines that reflect the place without artifice or makeup.
Labastida: the freshest and most Atlantic side of Rioja
The vineyards are located in one of the highest areas of Rioja Alavesa, where the climate is cooler and more humid.
The Atlantic influence brings natural tension and slower grape ripening.
Sandy, marl, and limestone soils contribute to the elegance and precision of the wines.
Small vineyards and biodynamic work
The project works with several small parcels, many of them old vines.
Organic and biodynamic practices are applied with the aim of maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
Field work is meticulous and fully oriented towards grape quality.
Winemaking in historic caves
The winery uses 12th-century caves in Labastida as a natural aging space.
These conditions provide stable temperature and humidity throughout the year, ideal for aging in large oak foudres.
Wine style: precision and fluidity
Dominio del Challao wines are defined by elegance, fluidity, and balance.
Gentle extraction is used to respect the character of the fruit and the terroir.
The result is expressive yet restrained wines with great aromatic finesse.
A contemporary Rioja without rigidity
This project represents a modern vision of Rioja, far from heavier styles or strong oak influence.
Freshness, energy, and vineyard identity take center stage.
