Château Carbonneau is a family estate located in the Sainte‑Foy Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, on the right bank of the Dordogne, between Pessac‑sur‑Dordogne and Gensac. The vineyards rest on clay‑limestone hills that, together with the Atlantic climate and river influence, favor optimal grape ripening and a true expression of the terroir.
Viticultural philosophy
While the estate’s vineyard dates back to the late 19th century, modern winemaking began in the 1990s under the Franc de Ferrière family. They replanted vines, restored the winery, and focused on crafting wines that reflect the land itself.
Château Carbonneau transitioned to organic farming (certified Agriculture Biologique from the 2022 harvest) and progressed into biodynamic agriculture with Demeter certification from 2023, emphasizing soil health, reduced external inputs, and respect for life both in the vineyard and the farm at large.
The vineyard and varietals
The estate benefits from a favorable south to southwest exposure. The main grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon—typical of right‑bank Bordeaux. The terroir’s clay‑limestone soils particularly favor Cabernet Franc’s structure and spice, providing complexity and balance when blended with Merlot.
Winemaking and expression
The restored winery blends traditional stone construction with modern stainless‑steel tanks and barrel ageing. Guided by Wilfrid and his son Pierre (oenologist), the team crafts wines that express the full potential of Château Carbonneau’s unique terroir—elegant, balanced, and reflective of their origin.
