History of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse
Château Grand-Puy Ducasse was founded in 1675 when Arnaud Ducasse acquired a small estate in Pauillac, beginning a family legacy that would span nearly three centuries and play an important role in shaping the vineyard.
In the 19th century, Pierre Ducasse significantly expanded the estate and consolidated its vineyard structure. In 1820, his son built the winemaking facilities directly on the Pauillac quay, making it one of the few estates still vinifying in the heart of the village.
In 1855, it was classified as a 5ème Grand Cru Classé, confirming its prestigious status among Bordeaux’s elite wines.
The Pauillac terroir
The vineyard is located on the gravel soils typical of Pauillac, an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon due to its excellent drainage and heat-retention capacity.
These soils provide structure, depth, and aging potential, as well as the characteristic minerality of the appellation.
Vineyard and grape varieties
The estate covers around 40 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a strong dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon to ensure structure and longevity.
The vineyards are located near prestigious estates such as Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild, reinforcing the exceptional quality of the terroir.
Sustainable viticulture and strict selection
The estate applies sustainable viticulture practices with environmental certifications, manual harvesting, and double grape sorting to ensure maximum quality.
The goal is to preserve fruit purity and produce wines that remain true to their origin.
Winemaking and aging
Winemaking takes place in modern temperature-controlled vats, combining tradition and technology to respect the identity of the terroir.
The wine is aged in French oak barrels for approximately 12 to 18 months, adding complexity, structure, and aging potential.
Style and tasting notes
Château Grand-Puy Ducasse wines represent the classic Pauillac style, with aromas of black fruit, cedar, tobacco, and spices.
On the palate, they are firm and structured, with pronounced tannins and excellent aging capacity, making them ideal for long bottle evolution.
