Dominio de Calogía
José Manuel Pérez Ovejas, a member of the Pérez Pascuas family (Viña Pedrosa) and its technical director, chose to leave the family business and forge his own path. Naturally, Roa del Duero in Burgos is where this experienced winemaker's destiny lies, as he cultivates old Tinto Fino vines in the Calogía vineyard, crafting wines of artistry and finesse.

Dominio de Calogía: José Manuel Pérez Ovejas’ most personal Ribera del Duero
Dominio de Calogía is one of the most personal and exclusive projects in Ribera del Duero. Born in 2019 through José Manuel Pérez Ovejas and his wife, Silvia Ortega, it represents the dream of creating a boutique winery conceived in the style of a French domaine, with estate vineyards, limited production and a very clear vision: to make signature wines capable of expressing the character of the Calogía estate with depth.
Located between the villages of Roa and Pedrosa de Duero, at the foot of Cuesta Manvirgo, the winery is surrounded by its own vineyards in a singular landscape of the Burgos area of Ribera del Duero. Everything at Dominio de Calogía is designed for precision: from the winery design to grape selection, ageing in French oak and the allocation-based sales system.
A dream turned into a boutique winery
Dominio de Calogía was born as a project of maturity, passion and high standards. After a long career making great wines, José Manuel Pérez Ovejas decided to build his own path with a small, modern and carefully designed winery, where every detail is oriented toward producing without limitations.
The winery stands out for its avant-garde design and its integration into the landscape. This is not an industrial facility without soul, but a space created to work with precision, functionality and sensitivity. Inside, every decision seeks to protect grape quality and support the production of deep, elegant wines with great ageing potential.
José Manuel Pérez Ovejas: a life devoted to wine
José Manuel Pérez Ovejas belongs to a family of winegrowers and winemakers, and has lived wine since childhood. His father, Benjamín Pérez, was a recognized winegrower and actively participated in the creation of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, a heritage that deeply shapes José Manuel’s view of the vineyard.
With more than thirty harvests behind him and a career recognized by the sector, Pérez Ovejas has been named Winemaker of the Year in 2017 and Best Winemaker in Spain in 2018 and 2023. This latest recognition came precisely for Dominio de Calogía 2020, a wine that consolidated the identity of this project as one of the new high-end references in Ribera del Duero.
The Calogía estate: origin, identity and style
All the vines of Dominio de Calogía are estate-owned and located in a special terroir that gives its name to both the winery and the wine. This estate defines the style from the beginning: low-production wines, great natural concentration, depth, freshness and a very personal interpretation of Tinto Fino.
The winery’s philosophy begins with knowing and understanding the vineyard. José Manuel Pérez Ovejas seeks low yields in order to obtain high-quality grapes, capable of offering fine nuances and an authentic expression of place. The idea is not to follow trends, but to remain faithful to a personal, recognizable style full of personality.
Authenticity, purity and pursuit of excellence
The official website defines the philosophy of Dominio de Calogía with two key words: authenticity and purity. This idea sums up the essence of the project very well. These are wines bearing the personal signature of José Manuel Pérez Ovejas, made from intuition, experience and constant self-demand.
Dominio de Calogía does not seek to make generic Ribera del Duero wines. Its aim is to create wines with essence, depth and their own style, where ripeness, freshness, structure and elegance coexist naturally. This is high-end Ribera del Duero, but with a clear vocation for subtlety and precision.
Tinto Fino, double manual selection and French Allier oak
Dominio de Calogía wines are made from 100% Tinto Fino, the historic grape variety of Ribera del Duero. Harvesting is carried out with double manual selection, a practice that allows only healthy, ripe and balanced grapes to be used.
Ageing takes place in French Allier oak barrels, with times varying depending on the wine and vintage. Dominio de Calogía 2022, for example, is aged for 15 months in French Allier oak, while Cuvée ‘S’ 2021 reaches 24 months. The wood supports the wine by bringing structure, texture and complexity, but without hiding the purity of the fruit or the character of the vineyard.
Dominio de Calogía: depth, elegance and ageing potential
Dominio de Calogía is the central wine of the project. In vintages such as 2021 and 2022, the winery presents it as a signature wine made from grapes from the estate’s vineyards, seeking a perfectionist interpretation of the Calogía terroir.
The style combines opulence, depth and intensity with elegance, complexity and subtlety. These are wines designed to evolve in bottle, with numbered editions and limited production. Dominio de Calogía 2021 consisted of 33,278 75 cl bottles, as well as Magnum and Double Magnum formats; Dominio de Calogía 2022 reduced its production to 25,528 75 cl bottles and 1,266 Magnums.
Cuvée ‘S’: the rarest and most selected expression
Dominio de Calogía Cuvée ‘S’ comes from an old 1.5-hectare vineyard with old, twisted vines that offer tiny yields. It is one of the winery’s most exclusive cuvées and does not appear in every vintage: it is only made when conditions allow the desired quality level to be reached.
Cuvée ‘S’ 2021 was made from 100% Tinto Fino, double manual selection and 24 months of ageing in French Allier oak barrels. Its production was very limited: 2,988 75 cl bottles, 363 Magnums, 20 bottles of 500 cl and 10 bottles of 18 litres. It is a dense, opulent and complex wine, but also round, enveloping, subtle and delicate.
Doble M: Atlantic freshness in Ribera del Duero
Dominio de Calogía Doble M comes from the La Loma site, in the municipality of Roa. It is a Tempranillo vineyard with northern exposure, located at more than 840 metres above sea level, bringing the wine a singular, fresh and Atlantic-style profile, uncommon in the area.
The 2022 vintage was marked by an especially hot summer, so the winery consciously chose not to carry out leaf removal in order to protect the bunches from heat stress. The result is an elegant, balanced and harmonious wine, with clear black fruit, well-integrated oak and a pure expression of the vineyard from which it comes.
Allocation wines, numbered editions and limited production
One of the traits that reinforces the exclusive character of Dominio de Calogía is its allocation-based sales system. Its wines have limited availability, numbered editions and highly controlled production, making them especially interesting references for collectors and lovers of great Spanish wines.
This approach fits the winery’s philosophy: not to produce a lot, but to produce with meaning. Each bottle is born from precise selection, a specific vintage and a personal interpretation of the vineyard.
Wines to cellar, gift and enjoy on great occasions
Dominio de Calogía wines are ideal for those looking for high-end Ribera del Duero, with structure, elegance and ageing potential. Their intensity and depth make them perfect with red meats, roast lamb, suckling pig, stews, game, mushrooms, Iberian cured meats, aged cheeses and Castilian cuisine.
They are also excellent wines for gifting or cellaring. Their numbered editions, limited production and the signature of José Manuel Pérez Ovejas make them bottles with special value, designed for important moments and long after-dinner conversations.
