Fitapreta was not created to make “correct” wines. It was created to ask uncomfortable questions in Alentejo. In Évora, António Maçanita works between history, archaeology, and vineyards as if they were all part of the same map. Forgotten grape varieties, ancestral talhas, and one very clear idea coexist here: wine is not a recipe, but memory in motion. Some wines look to the past, others challenge it, and some completely rewrite it. But none of them go unnoticed. Buy Fitapreta at Coalla Gourmet.
Más información sobre Fitapreta
Fitapreta is António Maçanita’s project in the heart of Alentejo, near Évora.
It is not a traditional winery in the classic sense, but rather a laboratory of ideas where wine becomes a tool to recover history, landscape, and viticultural culture.
From the very beginning, the project has been guided by a clear principle: to make wines that reflect not only today’s Alentejo, but also the Alentejo that almost disappeared.
The landscape of Fitapreta is shaped by granite, schist, and clay soils.
An extreme territory marked by thermal contrast, where vines coexist with both modern grapes and nearly forgotten native varieties.
This balance between past and present is the starting point of all their wines.
One of the most important parts of the project is the Chão dos Eremitas estate, home to old vines over 50 years old.
Here, historic varieties such as Tinta Carvalha, Moreto, Trincadeira das Pratas, and Alicante Branco help reconstruct an older version of Alentejo viticulture.
This is not about nostalgia, but about living archaeology applied to wine.
Fitapreta divides its work between more classic ranges and experimental series.
On one side are wines that represent their vision of modern Alentejo: precise and balanced.
On the other is a more radical line exploring techniques such as talha winemaking, fermenting white wines with red grapes, or unconventional interpretations of local varieties.
The result is a broad yet coherent portfolio: everything comes from the same territory, even if not every wine tells the story in the same way.
One of the project’s most distinctive elements is the use of talha clay amphorae, an ancient Portuguese winemaking technique.
Here, wine ferments and evolves in contact with clay vessels, reviving a method that predates modern oenology.
Fitapreta does not use it as a folkloric gesture, but as a genuine tool for expressing the wine.
António Maçanita combines technical expertise with a clearly unconventional attitude.
His work at Fitapreta does not aim to follow trends, but to challenge them.
That is why the wines can sometimes feel classic, sometimes experimental, and often both at the same time.
Today, Fitapreta is one of the most influential wineries of the new Alentejo.
A project that has helped recover grape varieties, techniques, and ways of understanding wine that were at risk of disappearing.
At Coalla Gourmet, we select Fitapreta because it represents a different Alentejo: deeper, more historical, and freer.
Wines that do not try to please everyone, but instead aim to tell, with precision, where they come from.
