Escolinas

Escolinas

Escolinas: the essence of heroic Asturian viticulture

In the heart of Cangas del Narcea, among steep mountains, impossible terraces and vineyards that defy the slope, Escolinas is born: a wine project that represents the recovery and enhancement of one of the most unique winemaking traditions in northern Spain. More than a winery, Escolinas is a tribute to the landscape, to the memory of generations of winegrowers, and to the authenticity of Atlantic wines produced in Asturias.

The project was created with the aim of bringing the wines of Cangas to their highest qualitative expression, recovering native grape varieties and traditional methods adapted to a contemporary vision of wine. Each bottle reflects the character of an extreme land, marked by Atlantic influence, slate soils, and an almost entirely manual, artisanal viticulture.

A story rooted in the territory

Escolinas was founded by Ramón Coalla and Javier Zaeta, two wine enthusiasts with a deep connection to the distribution world and Spanish wine culture. From the very beginning, the goal was clear: to recover the historical and oenological value of the wines of Cangas del Narcea and demonstrate the enormous potential of this unique territory.

The winemaking tradition of Cangas dates back centuries, historically linked to the Monastery of Corias and the arrival of Benedictine monks, who promoted vine cultivation in this mountainous area of Asturias. Today, Escolinas carries that legacy forward, transforming it into modern, honest wines deeply rooted in their origin.

Heroic viticulture in Asturias

Talking about Escolinas means talking about heroic viticulture. Its vineyards are located on steep slopes where mechanization is practically impossible and each harvest requires enormous manual effort. These extreme conditions not only make the landscapes unique but also define the wines, characterized by marked Atlantic freshness, strong mineral expression, and a highly distinctive personality.

The Atlantic climate, steep slopes, and slate soils create the perfect environment for native grape varieties such as Carrasquín, Verdejo Negro, and Albarín Negro—historic grapes of the region that Escolinas works with the utmost respect to preserve their identity and authenticity.

Philosophy: tradition, authenticity and respect

The philosophy of Escolinas is based on producing honest wines that reflect the landscape and the tradition of Cangas without artifice. Its winemaking combines modern techniques with processes inherited from previous generations, respecting the raw material and the uniqueness of each parcel as much as possible.

Each wine aims to transmit the essence of the territory: freshness, minerality, tension, and Atlantic elegance. These are wines with their own identity, far from uniform styles and designed to express the wild and authentic character of northern Spain.

In addition, Escolinas works with limited and carefully controlled production, where every detail matters—from manual grape selection to the individual interpretation of each vineyard. The result is exclusive wines with a unique personality, recognizable for their purity and balance.

Wines with their own identity

The Escolinas range represents different interpretations of the Cangas vineyards and its native varieties. Among its wines are references such as Mezcla Canguesa, La Zorrina, Carrasquín, and Verdejo Negro, each showing a different facet of the Asturian territory.

Its wines stand out for their fresh, elegant, and Atlantic profile, with fruit-driven expression, herbal notes, and marked minerality. They are gastronomic, complex, and distinctive wines, capable of surprising both enthusiasts and more experienced wine lovers.

Escolinas and the future of Asturian wine

Escolinas represents a new generation of wine projects committed to recovering local wine heritage and producing authentic, sustainable wines deeply connected to the territory. Its work has helped position the wines of Cangas as one of the most interesting and singular emerging wine regions in Spain.

More than just making wine, Escolinas preserves a culture, protects a landscape, and defends a way of understanding viticulture based on effort, respect for the land, and authenticity. Each bottle is a reflection of the untamed character of Asturias and the passion of those who continue to keep this centuries-old tradition alive.
