At Coalla Gourmet, we present Azores Wine Company, a unique winery located on Pico Island in the Azores wine region of Portugal. Founded on April 3, 2014, by winemaker António Maçanita, Azorean Filipe Rocha, and Paulo Machado, this winery was born with the ambition of reviving the indigenous grape varieties of the Azores and producing wines that reflect the unique identity of its volcanic terroirs.

History and Philosophy of the Winery

The story of Azores Wine Company began with the revival of the nearly extinct Terrantez do Pico variety in 2010, a project led by António Maçanita that highlighted the enormous potential of the native grape varieties and the Azorean terroir. From there, the founders consolidated a project that combines viticulture, gastronomy, and the promotion of Azorean wine worldwide.

Volcanic terroir and unique grape varieties

The vineyards are located in the spectacular Pico Island Vineyard Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Volcanic soils, proximity to the sea, and unique climatic conditions impart freshness, minerality, and salinity to white, rosé, and red wines made with Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho, Terrantez do Pico, and Saborinho, among other varieties.

A comprehensive winery

In addition to its wine production, Azores Wine Company has developed a complete wine tourism project with a winery designed to blend into the landscape, tasting areas, and accommodations, promoting wine culture and local gastronomy.
