Clos Ibai: A Wine Project Born in Rioja Alavesa

Clos Ibai is a wine project that began in 2014 in Rioja Alavesa with the aim of preserving unique vineyards and giving them new life through wine. The winery's name perfectly reflects its philosophy: “Clos,” a French term that defines a vineyard enclosed by stone walls—often of monastic origin—and “Ibai,” a Basque word meaning river, in reference to the nearby Ebro River that shapes the region's landscape.

From its inception, the Clos Ibai winery has been committed to producing Rioja Alavesa wines that faithfully reflect the character of the vineyard and its surroundings.

Old Vineyards in Baños de Ebro

The project is driven by Daniel Frías and Xabier Kamio, who have focused their work on recovering and caring for old vineyards located in Baños de Ebro, an area with a long winemaking tradition within Rioja Alavesa.

Many of these traditional plots had been abandoned due to a lack of generational succession. These old vines, often protected by small stone walls that shield them from the elements, offer more limited but high-quality yields, allowing Clos Ibai wines to be crafted with their own unique identity.

Organic Viticulture and Biodynamic Wines

Clos Ibai's philosophy is based on environmentally friendly viticulture. The vineyards are cultivated according to organic principles, and minimal intervention practices are employed in the winery, aiming for the wine to honestly express its terroir.

Furthermore, the project is committed to biodynamics and is currently in the process of obtaining Demeter certification, with the goal of becoming one of the wineries in Rioja Alavesa that produce certified biodynamic wine.

The result is organic wines from Rioja Alavesa that convey the character of the vineyard and the authenticity of the land.
