At Coalla Gourmet, we present Bodegas Gutiérrez de la Vega, a family-run winery located between Xàbia and Parcent, in the heart of the Marina Alta region (Alicante). Its story begins in the 1970s, when Felipe Gutiérrez de la Vega and his wife Pilar settled in an old Riu Rau, a traditional structure used to protect Muscat raisins, with the aim of reviving the family vineyards and the winemaking culture of the area.
Pilar's family was part of the historic raisin-making tradition that reached its peak in the 19th century, when Muscat grapes from the Marina Alta were exported to the English-speaking world. In an old 19th-century wine press, they began making wine, learning from the traditional knowledge passed down through generations.
Pioneers in Dry and Naturally Sweet Muscat
From the beginning, they focused on traditional varieties, especially Muscat of Alexandria and Giró, pioneering the production of dry Muscat, something uncommon at the time, as well as creating highly prestigious naturally sweet wines.
In 1982, they moved the winery to a former olive oil mill in Parcent, where they began to establish their reputation both nationally and internationally. In 1992, they inaugurated new facilities adapted to more precise and modern viticulture, always respecting the essence of the terroir.
International Recognition and Prestige
One of their most emblematic wines, Casta Diva Cosecha Miel, was chosen as the dessert wine for the wedding of the King and Queen of Spain in 2004, solidifying the winery's reputation as a benchmark for high-end sweet wines.
With the addition of Violeta Gutiérrez de la Vega, the project delves deeper into the recovery and study of the Giró grape variety, vinifying plots separately to express the distinct soils of the Marina Alta region with greater purity, always striving for elegance, finesse, and authentic Mediterranean character.
