The founding of Maison Krug
1843: Joseph Krug founded Maison Krug in Reims with a radical idea for its time: to produce the best possible Champagne every year, regardless of climatic variation. His approach broke with the concept of “vintage wine” and focused instead on consistency of style and quality.
1848: Joseph Krug recorded his vision in a personal notebook that would become the philosophical foundation of the house, stating that only through great terroirs and great base wines can an exceptional wine be created.
A philosophy based on blending
From its origins, Krug developed a system based on the meticulous selection of vineyard parcels and the creation of a vast library of reserve wines from multiple vintages.
This approach allows the creation of each new edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, blending hundreds of different wines to achieve complexity, balance, and consistency.
The identity of Krug Grande Cuvée
Krug Grande Cuvée was born as the most generous expression of Champagne.
Each edition is unique, yet maintains a recognisable style: depth, structure, and aromatic complexity. The goal is not to replicate a year, but to recreate the founder’s vision with every harvest.
Innovation within tradition
Throughout its history, the maison has developed cuvées that reinforce its philosophy of individuality:
- Clos du Mesnil (1980): a single-vineyard, single-variety, single-vintage project
- Clos d’Ambonnay (late 20th century): an extreme expression of Pinot Noir from a single parcel
- Krug Rosé (1983): a reinterpretation of rosé through the blending philosophy
These creations reinforce the idea that each parcel can express its own identity within the Krug style.
The present of Maison Krug
Today, Krug continues its work in Reims, combining tradition and technology with modern facilities and a sustainable vision of production.
The tasting of hundreds of wines each year by the winemaking team ensures stylistic coherence while respecting the individuality of each parcel and vintage.
A globally recognised Champagne style
Krug has established itself as one of the most prestigious Champagne houses in the world, renowned for its depth, ageing potential, and complexity.
Its identity does not depend on a single harvest, but on the sum of many wine memories carefully blended year after year.
